Yesterday it was confirmed that the European Championships have been postponed until the summer of 2021.
Within the Chelsea ranks, there will be one player more than the rest who would have been dreading this news, France international Olivier Giroud.
It is of course due to the global Coronavirus pandemic sweeping the world right now, and attempts to get leagues finished over the summer instead.
The Chelsea striker would have likely got into the French squad by the skin of his teeth after not really playing much first team football at all under Frank Lampard.
But his late surge into the starting line up in the last few games in place of the injured Tammy Abraham, might just have given him hope for a place in the squad, which would largely have been seen as his last chance to represent France in a major competition.
Giroud is a World Cup winner with France and will be eager to have one more major outing. But this is now in doubt due to the postponement.
He will be almost 35 years old when the rearranged Championships are set to commence, surely hugely putting in doubt any chance he might have to make that squad now.
He might also have to face the fact that he could go another season playing a bit-part role for whatever club he is at next season, meaning he is unlikely to get selected for international duty.
Giroud is much loved by the Chelsea and French fans though, and miracles do happen, let’s hope he still gets his deserved last international outing next summer!
