Chelsea came out emphatic 7-1 winners against Grimsby Town in the Carabaco Cup third round last night, and it was a night of dreams for the club’s academy.
The Blues academy is one of the best in the world and has been producing great talent for many years. Finally though, they have someone in Frank Lampard who is willing to give chances to some of the quality being produced, and it’s long overdue.
Lampard named ten players from the academy within his 18 man squad last night, and handed debuts to Marc Guehi, Reece James, Ian Maatsen, and Faustino Anjorin.
They all played very well and looked comfortable slotting straight into senior football. But it was James who grabbed the majority of the headlines with the anticipation having already grown over his return from injury. He was assured, scored a fantastic goal, and got 2 assists from right back.
But one player who had already grabbed his senior debut a few weeks back but who’s performance has gone under the radar a little with the media at least, is 18-year old Scotsman Billy Gilmour.
The guy literally gets to training an hour early every day to study the movement and play of his idol Cesc Fabregas on videos.
"The training starts at 9 every morning but I get to the training ground at 8. I spend one hour watching videos of Fabregas, how he moves without the ball, how he pass the ball, how he picks his teammates. He's my favorite" – Billy Gilmour
Good performance from him today 👊 pic.twitter.com/czP9bmexm1

Watching him play, he mirrors many of Fabregas’ attributes. How calm and composed he is, his vision for a pass, how he controls the game and the tempo and orchestrates others, its just fantastic.
It was a performance that his counter-part Jorginho will be proud of. The Italian likes to dictate play and instruct others movement with pointing and being vocal, Gilmour was doing just that last night.
In fact, his stats show the equivalent of a set of stats off the back of a perfect performance from Jorginho or Fabregas.
He made 96 passes in the game and completed 93% of them, which is very impressive. Everything went through him, he was the Chelsea heartbeat.
Fantastic performance from @billygilmourrr!

He also has one thing that the compared players do not have – he is quick. This gives him that added ability in recovering, something that will really make him stand out in the future.
A future superstar, no doubt.
