Chelsea are currently seeing out their transfer ban and are still awaiting an appeal date from the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
They may be allowed to sign players again in January if the appeal is successful. But as time moves on without official word, one would feel that the summer now looks more likely to be the next time they can sign players, and that might be a good thing.
January is a rough time to sign players, with inflated prices and a shorter time to get deals done.
Frank Lampard has filled his squad with a number of younger players from the academy and it is working well for him so far. Fikayo Tomori, Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham have arguably been three of Chelsea’s best players so far this season, with Reece James, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ruben Loftus-Cheek all just returned or set to return from injury.
The transfer ban has become a forgotten subject, many have even classed it as a blessing and I’d have to agree.
However, come the end of the season, in order for Chelsea to push on I believe there will be at least 3 positions that will need a player addition.
Once Emerson returns from injury I can only see Marcos Alonso becoming more and more unhappy, and could leave this summer as a result. The Blues need a quality left back to directly compete with Emerson, not just an average backup.
Pedro will move on this summer, Willian is still yet to sign a new deal. We could actually end up needing two wingers depending on the progress of Christian Pulisic. We need a world class addition here and an area we should fork out some cash. Top sides need four top wingers.
This is where the debate comes in. A few weeks ago I’d be saying we need a world class number 9 and spend whatever it takes. Although I’m not ruling that plan out, a large part of me feels that you really cannot bench Tammy Abraham if he ends up scoring 25 odd goals this season which he is well ahead of schedule for already. If he keeps this form up, he deserves to stay as the main man up top.
A solution could be someone similar in ability, that maybe offers other elements to his game, to come in and give Abraham some very close competition. But with Olivier Giroud leaving this summer, and Michy Batshuayi also likely to ask to leave, we will need a top quality striker in regardless.
