Tiemoue Bakayoko and Danny Drinkwater are set to leave Chelsea this summer after assessments by Frank Lampard during pre-season, according to a report in The Daily Mail.
Drinkwater didn’t play a competitive match for Maurizio Sarri last season and neither did Tiemoue Bakayoko, who spent the year on loan at AC Milan.
Both had a chance to impress Lampard pre-season, with the new head coach giving every player a clean slate.
But if the report is true, both are now free to leave.
This could now leave a spot in the first team squad as extra cover, for youngster Billy Gilmour.
The 18-year old could feature for Chelsea today in their friendly against Reading, and he has also been impressive in the game time he’s had already this pre-season.
There’s been a real buzz surrounding the talent that he has and how technically brilliant he is, and rightly so.
He’s made a number of our senior players look average with how comfortable he is on the ball, and he possesses the qualities to be an asset defensively, as well as in the attacking third, making him perfect to sit in that midfield position as one of the two in a pivot.
Chelsea have a number of players who can play in that role with Joginho, N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic being the main three in that position, but Gilmour could be a great backup option.
Although I expect Gilmour to be predominantly in the development squad this year, he will certainly be the first to be called on should there be injuries/fatigue. This of course is based on Bakayoko and Drinkwater both leaving.
Gilmour is one of those players who you watch and he just has that extra factor about him, that special buzz in the way he plays. You just know he will become a real top talent.
I think he could really be a surprise package this season, if given a chance.
