Will he stay or will he leave? This saga is becoming yet another one that seems to be dragging on to the point that nobody has any idea what is going on.
Both Frank Lampard and Willian himself have remained coy on the subject when questioned recently, but both seemingly point towards being happy if he stays.
But the fact of the matter is, time is running out if Chelsea do have any desire to keep hold of Willian, he will be free to agree a deal with a new club in January. And if the rumours are to be believed, he isn’t short of clubs wanting to agree that deal with him.
So will Chelsea let him go for free? Or will they get him to sign on the dotted line?
Bizarrely, The Evening Standard ran a story way back in July claiming that Chelsea and Willian had actually agreed a new contract until 2021.
This would go against their own policy of only offering over 30s one-year extensions. However, they had already broken that policy back in May when they gave David Luiz a 2-year extension, as reported here by The BBC at the time.
I don’t think you need to be a rocket scientist to figure out that the two have not agreed a new deal yet because Willian wants a longer extension, but Chelsea are only offering 1-year.
Willian is playing regularly and looks like a key part of Lampard’s immediate plans anyway, and he was also handed his desired number 10 shirt. So the will to back him and commit to him was and is there, whether Chelsea fans like it or not.
But the question is whether any side of the negotiations are willing to meet in the middle. I don’t think Willian will sign unless it’s a 2-year deal, and right now Chelsea aren’t budging on the 1-year.
It will be interesting to see how this one concludes.
