Chelsea have been leaking goals during their pre-season campaign so far, and conceded another three to RB Salzburg on Wednesday evening.
This is nothing to panic about though, nor is it anything new for pre-season. It’s also largely as a result of using many disruptive substitutions causing a lack of organisation.
However, Frank Lampard will have a selection headache once N’Golo Kante returns to full fitness. Who will be his preferred two in the deep double pivot?
Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic, and N’Golo Kante will be the three battling it out in there.
For me, Kante must be the first name on the team sheet, he is one of our few world class players.
Not only for that reason though, we need him for his defensive ability. We need his energy, his mobility, his hassling, and his incredible ability to intercept and pick a pocket.
Jorginho is a class player, but he doesn’t have the same intensity and athleticism as Kante, whilst Mateo Kovacic is proving that he does have that.
Kovacic has actually looked more comfortable under an intense press this pre-season than Jorginho, and he also has the ability to dribble the ball out from the back, which the Italian does not.
Jorginho is obviously the king of keeping the ball and orchestrating play from the back, there aren’t many better at doing this. He’s excellent in tight areas and using triangles to move forward.
But for me, I just feel that this system needs the double pivot to consist of players who are a bit more rapid and mobile.
Which is why I can see Kante and Kovacic largely getting the nod, both bringing more energy to get up and back again.
