Why young Chelsea prospect could be called upon more often than not

Billy Gilmour has been included in Chelsea’s squad to face Liverpool in the Super Cup Final this evening, as reported by Oliver Hardbord of Football London.

The 18-year old was the talk of Chelsea’s pre-season, having played in a couple of the early matches.

He impressed Blues fans with his composure, confidence, and natural technical ability. He was also a very good passer, and looked superb in one of those deeper midfield positions.

With Lampard looking likely to continue with the 4-2-3-1 formation this season, we might well be seeing a lot of more Gilmour in the first team.

Having lost Danny Drinkwater, and Tiemoue Bakayoko likely to leave, Lampard has Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic and N’Golo Kante as the main three for that role.

With Mason Mount, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Ross Barkley, and even Andreas Christensen all able to fill in if needed.

However, the aforementioned are needed and are much stronger elsewhere on the pitch, and perhaps aren’t as familiar with the role as Gilmour, who thrives in that position.

With that mentioned, and taking into account injuries and fatigue, we might well see Gilmour drafted in as a fourth option in that position, should he be needed.

We are also likely to see him come in during domestic cup early rounds, regardless.

With Frank Lampard’s trust in youth, Gilmour is a name we could be getting a little used to hearing this season.
