Arsenal legend Paul Merson has revealed his surprise that Aaron Ramsey is still at the club, following interest from Chelsea.

Chelsea were tentatively linked with Ramsey towards the tail end of the transfer window. We were clearly in the market for a new midfielder, perhaps setting aside some cash for Maurizio Sarri to spend in that area.

In ended up being the acquisition of Kepa Arrizabalaga which swallowed up the remainder of our transfer budget, with Mateo Kovacic arriving without us parting with a penny.

Either way, the Metro report that we did show interest in signing the Welshman. Merson is surprised that the move didn’t materialise. He thought that Ramsey could be playing in a Chelsea shirt.

As quoted by the Metro, Merson said:

“I am shocked he is still there. He should just sign now. I thought Chelsea might come in for him. But Arsenal is a massive football club.”

Ramsey’s contract situation is still precarious. If he doesn’t sign soon, Arsenal may well be forced to sell. If Chelsea are unable to turn Kovacic’s loan into a permanent transfer, Ramsey should be an option we re-explore in January or next summer.
