Chelsea centre-back David Luiz is reportedly keen to re-join former side Benfica this summer.
The Blues signed Luiz from the Portuguese giants back in January 2011. The arrival of Fernando Torres on the same day for a British transfer record fee overshadowed the signing of the Brazilian, but he has proven to be a more worthy addition than Torres was.
Having re-joined Chelsea in the summer of 2016 and planted at the heart of Antonio Conte’s back-three, Luiz continued to write his chapter in the club’s history books. He was influential in our Premier League title triumph in 2016/17, but it has been a different story this time around.
Issues with the manager and struggles with injury essentially ruled Luiz out of the entirety of the last campaign. It would be a sad way for him to bow out, but it looks as though he is keen to call time on his career at Stamford Bridge once and for all.
According to Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manhã (via Sport Witness), Luiz wants to return to Benfica. However, he is not the kind of player that they are looking to recruit this summer, meaning he could be left out in the cold.
