Chelsea are reportedly interested in signing Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.

It may seem unusual for the club to pursue the son of a Manchester United legend, but Kasper is no longer shackled to the shadow of his father, Peter, he proved that against Croatia on Sunday evening.

Schmeichel saved a penalty from Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric with just a few minutes left of extra-time, forcing the World Cup knockout clash into penalties. The Dane saved two more penalties in the shootout, but it wasn’t enough to take his country through to the quarter-finals.

His man of the match performance against Croatia does not appear to have gone unnoticed. According to Sky Sports, both Chelsea and AS Roma are interested in signing Schmeichel this summer.

The two side’s respective interest may be the clearest indication to date that Thibaut Courtois and Alisson Becker will be on the move this summer. It’s unclear whether Schmeichel is a priority target, or rather a contingency plan.
