Chelsea have confirmed that Mateo Kovacic has joined the club on a season-long loan from Real Madrid.

Mateo Kovacic signing for Real Madrid from Inter Milan was supposed to be the launch pad for him to secure his world-class status. However, despite being present at the Santiago Bernabeu for a period of great success, he struggled to establish himself as a starter in the side.

Kovacic also reached the final of the World Cup this summer with Russia. Once again, he was not a mainstay in the starting eleven. He has a point to prove at Chelsea, which will undoubtedly work in our favour.

There doesn’t appear to be an option to buy, which may seem bizarre for Chelsea fans. However, Maurizio Sarri has got the midfielder he desired, with the funds that were put aside for one being invested into Kepa Arrizabalaga, who WILL be at the club long-term.

We look forward to seeing Kovacic in a Chelsea shirt this season alongside Jorginho and N’Golo Kante. If this signing proves to be a success, we imagine Chelsea will focus all of their resources next summer on getting a permanent deal done.

Upon signing for the club, Kovacic told the Chelsea website:

“I am really happy and excited to be here at Chelsea. It is an amazing feeling. I will try to do my best for this club.”

“It is a new league for me, the beginning is always tough but I am sure the coach and my new team-mates will help me and I am looking forward to a great season.”

Welcome, Mateo!
