It’s been a slow start to the transfer window all over Europe, and things are only now getting into gear. Chelsea’s biggest move so far was selling Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid, and their work on a replacement for the Spaniard is crawling along.
Pep Chavarria was the surprise name mentioned a couple of weeks ago, and the Rayo Vallecano full back still looks like the favourite to be brought in. He’s got the green light from Xabi Alonso (in fact, the Basque coach picked him out himself), and Chelsea have already had a £9m for him rejected. So what comes next?

According to our writer Simon Phillips on his Substack, “personal terms with the player are agreed.” Chelsea have put in a second offer, which Philips speculates is around £15m, splitting the different between Rayo’s reported £21m asking price and our £9m opening offer.
Given the relatively small sums involved, there’s no reason to think this can’t all be resolved pretty quickly. Preseason starts tomorrow – there’s no time to waste, especially over just a couple of million pounds.
