Athletic Bilbao centre-back Aymeric Laporte has admitted that he rejected both Chelsea and Manchester City in the summer, as talkSPORT reports.
The Frenchman has become one of the most promising defenders in the world and caught the eye of manager Antonio Conte.
But when speaking this week, the 23-year-old revealed that he turned down the chance to move to England because he was happy in Spain.
talkSport quotes Laporte saying:
“I had the chance to leave but I did not feel it. Chelsea’s interest? I cannot say anything, it’s a personal thing.”
Perhaps Laporte would be open to joining the Blues in the future. However, he clearly doesn’t want to move clubs at this stage of his career.
Chelsea are also well stocked at centre-back. Gary Cahill, Cesar Azpilicueta, David Luiz the list goes on. Conte may have found his alternative to Laporte in signing Antonio Rudiger from Roma in the recent transfer window.
It would probably be in our best interest to look at strengthening in other positions.
