Paris Saint-Germain have announced the signing of Neymar from Barcelona in a world-record deal. In this special TalkChelsea article, we throw it back seven years when Chelsea were reportedly on the verge of signing the Brazilian.

Chelsea are close to signing Santos prodigy Neymar, according to the Telegraph.

As per the Telegraph, Chelsea scout Michael Emenalo, whose influence when it comes to the club’s transfer dealings is growing, was in attendance as Neymar shone for Brazil during their 2-0 victory over the USA.

The Telegraph believe that Chelsea had a £17M bid rejected for Neymar earlier in the summer, with Santos holding out for a £29.6M fee. The Blues are, the Telegraph claim, unwilling to pay that much for the 18-year-old, who has no prior experience in the European game.

The Telegraph do report, however, that sources close to the negotiations are growing increasingly confident that a deal will be reached to take Neymar to SW6 this summer.

It is reported that West Ham also had a bid rejected for Neymar earlier in the transfer window, but after hearing of Chelsea’s interest in the Santos star, they have dropped out of the race to sign him.

The Telegraph note that Neymar’s fellow Brazilian, Ramires, is also expected to complete an £18M transfer from Benfica in the coming days. David Luiz, also a Benfica player, is thought to be on the club’s radar.
