  • Olivier Harbord believes Chelsea could loan players to Derby County.
  • Frank Lampard and Jody Morris have taken charge at Pride Park.
  • Mason Mount could be one player to benefit from the connection.

Football London reporter Oliver Harbord has told the Derby Telegraph that he sees it as a real possibility that Chelsea could look to loan youngsters to Derby County this season, following the arrivals of Frank Lampard and Jody Morris at Pride Park.

Lampard was handed his managerial debut by the Rams at the tail end of May. He opted to take Chelsea U18 manager Morris with him to the EFL Championship side, meaning there’ll be a strong Chelsea connection there next season.

Inevitably, questions have been asked whether Chelsea will give Lampard a hand next season by loaning him players this summer. It seems even more logical when you consider that Morris worked alongside this current crop of talented Blues for several years during his time at the club.

Football London reporter Oliver Harbord believes it likely that we could see Chelsea and Derby do business this summer. He’s earmarked Mason Mount, who spent the 2017/18 campaign on-loan with Vitesse Arnhem, as a player who could benefit.

He’s quoted by the Derby Telegraph saying:

“It is a real possibility that some players might head to Derby and the best thing about Morris being on board is that he will know which ones could help the Rams.”
“For one, Mason Mount is a player that has been superb on loan in the Eredivisie at Vitesse last season and he was Morris’s captain when Chelsea won the FA Youth Cup in 2017.”

Mount scored eight goals and provided six assists in the Eredivisie last season. The 19-year-old won the club’s player of the year award for his first ever campaign as a professional footballer.

Of course, there are stronger leagues for Mount to compete in, and the tougher challenges lie ahead. The early signs are extremely encouraging, though, and he appears well-equipped to compete in the EFL Championship.

We imagine that both Lampard and Morris would be delighted to have a player as talented as Mount at their disposal next season. This is certainly one to keep an eye on as the summer transfer window develops.
