Xabi Alonso has just taken his first pre-match press conference as Chelsea manager, ahead of the friendly against Western Sydney Wanderers. Of course, he ended up speaking more about a player who isn’t yet on the tour than he did about the game.
We can’t blame him though – the record signing of Morgan Rogers is all anyone is thinking about right now.
Alonso on Rogers’ positions and role in Chelsea team
Alonso has clearly been thinking about where he’s going to use his new attacking piece, too:
“One of his best qualities is that he is flexible. He plays in that pocket position, close to the striker, close to our number ten – but he has also played on the right side even though he is more used to coming from the left,” the new Chelsea boss said in quotes picked up on the club’s official website.
“I’m sure Morgan won’t need much time to adapt to the club, to the system, to his team-mates. The idea was that we wanted to get a top player: Morgan is one of them.”
On the subject of Rogers linking up with his old friend Cole Palmer, Alonso said mysteriously that he “has a plan.”

Alonso also explained why he thought Rogers was going to give his team such an advantage compared to the previous people in his spot.
