Chelsea fans are super excited to have Xabi Alonso in charge. That’s mainly because he’s seen as a really top young manager, with tons of potential. But there’s more to it than that – there is also a lot of hope that he can bring a really exciting style of play to Stamford Bridge.
In a very cautious, almost cagey press conference today, he wasn’t making any promises about that. But he did say that his team would make progress through the season, and would finish stronger than they started.
Alonso promises a Chelsea who are better in May than August

“We need to go step by step,” Alonso said today.
“For that we need to create good energies, good chemistry in the team. The team that will start in August won’t be the same team that finishes in May, and I’m sure that team in May will be better than the first day.”
Given they’re not playing European football, we could really see them kick it up a gear after Christmas, once they’ve got familiar with the manager’s ideas and when other teams are increasingly distracted and fatigued. That’s the hope, anyway…
In other news…
Levi Colwill is back fit again, and was able to speak openly about how difficult last season was for him as he sat out injured.
Alex Scott remains a player Chelsea are interested, although signing him is looking harder and harder given how much we’ve spent in other areas.
