It’s been a slow start to the summer, but with the World Cup almost over there’s the sense that things could start to accelerate at Chelsea.
One big question hanging over this summer is what to do with the goalkeepers. The assumption is that no attempt will be made to sign a senior keeper who is aiming to compete with Robert Sanchez – the Spaniard will keep the first choice role, Mike Penders will come back from loan to back him up, Filip Jorgensen will be sold and a free agent veteran will come in as third choice.
Penders will provide “serious competition” to Sanchez

But how realistic is it that Penders not only backs up Sanchez, but also competes and becomes first choice before the end of the season? That’s what Nizaar Kinsella looked at in his piece for the BBC today.
He says that Penders will be “serious competition” for Sanchez, who has lost his place temporarily in each of the last three seasons. There are plenty of flaws in his game, but one of his formative coaches says he’s got the ceiling to be as good as his countryman, Thibaut Courtois.
In other news…
Mamadou Sarr has had a bad start at Chelsea, and the club are now looking to get his development back on track with a loan to another Premier League club.
The chatter about Trevoh Chalobah is that he’s close to a move to Como, after the Blues finally agreed a transfer price with the Italian side.
