Gianfranco Zola

Gianfranco Zola knows a good player when he sees one. There were few better than him during his day. That nose for talent is a useful asset in football, and thankfully for Chelsea, we’re the ones benefiting from it since he rejoined alongside Maurizio Sarri.

Zola and Sarri have formed quite the team at Stamford Bridge, our position in the table is testament to that. Not to mention that Chelsea are the only team in Europe’s top five leagues who remains unbeaten in all competitions.

One player who has played a starring role in our success so far this term is Ross Barkley. The Englishman was phenomenal in October and was robbed of the Premier League player of the month award by Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Zola has been impressed with what he’s seen of Barkley this season. So impressed, in fact, that our assistant manager has branded him one of the best midfielders in the country.

He’s quoted by Sky Sports saying:

“We always knew he had ability – physical ability, technical ability. But to play the midfield position, he was lacking a little bit of tactical awareness and defensive awareness.”

“He’s doing very well right now and it’s making him a better player. All these things, added to what he already had, is making him one of the best midfielders in the country.”

Barkley needs to put in these performances on a consistent basis before he can be compared to the best, but he’s on an upward trajectory, he’ll get there with time.
