Danny Drinkwater is NOT a happy man.
The midfielder signed for the Premier League champions on transfer deadline day from Leicester City. He didn’t make his debut in blue until last month, as he was sidelined with a calf injury. However, Drinkwater is fit again now and available for selection.
According to the Mirror, Drinkwater is furious. The tabloid claim that he was called up to the England squad last week by Gareth Southgate after a number of midfielders pulled out – but he declined.
The Mirror report that Drinkwater was concerned about the condition of his calf, so opted to remain at the Cobham training ground for treatment, but it has been widely interpreted as him snubbing his country.
It is mentioned in the report that Drinkwater is now extremely angry and believes that the situation has dented his hopes of making it to the 2018 World Cup.
This is ridiculous.
Drinkwater has made a mature decision to skip two meaningless friendlies in order to be fully fit and functioning for both club and country later down the line.
It is absolutely ridiculous that the media have twisted this so that it reflects badly on him. Hopefully Southgate does not buy into the ‘snub’ nonsense.
