How about this for praise.
Chelsea youngster Ethan Ampadu has been compared with Rio Ferdinand by his national manager Chris Coleman, the Daily Mail reports.
Ampadu was given half an hour to impress Coleman and it looks like he’s done just that despite Wales losing 2-0 against France in Paris.
When speaking after the game, Coleman believes there’s a long way to go for Ampadu before reaching Ferdinand’s level. However, the ability to play in midfield and defence caught the eye of the 47-year-old, as the Daily Mail reports.
“He could end up playing holding midfielder or as a centre-back. He’s got a long way to go before you can liken him to someone like Rio Ferdinand, but I remember him coming on at West Ham in midfield.”
Ethan Ampadu’s background
The 17-year-old has had an incredible last few months.
Ampadu signed for Chelsea from League Two side Exeter City in the summer. However, the two clubs are still negotiating a fee for the player.
The teenager has been a regular name on the bench of Antonio Conte’s squad this season.
Ampadu has featured in the Carabao Cup for the Blues including starting against Everton. He’s been playing as a defensive midfielder for Chelsea.
At such a young age, it’s hard to predict Ampadu’s future. Although it says a lot when we are signing a teenager from another club when there’s plenty of potential in our youngsters in the academy.
