Thibaut Courtois’ current situation at Real Madrid is a perfect example of why you ought to be careful what you wish for.

Courtois pushed for a move to the Santiago Bernabeu all summer long. He disrespected the club, the manager, the fans and his teammates in doing so.

The Belgian opted against returning to training and meeting with new boss Maurizio Sarri. Instead taking the coward’s way out and remaining on holiday until his move to Real Madrid was signed and sealed.

Eventually, it was, and Chelsea fans didn’t shed a tear. Courtois dedicated his summer to joining Los Blancos – only to sit on the bench during his opening fixtures with them.

Judging by these comments by manager Julen Lopetegui on the situation, he may well have to get used to it. Lopetegui is quoted by Football London saying:

“It’s not a situation that’s easy to understand, but it’s simple enough to explain.”

“I’ve got some really good options in goal and there are no problems in that area. We’ll decide what’s best for each game.”

We struggle to feel any sympathy for the bloke. This is the Kepa Arrizabalaga era now. Courtois is in the past.
