Has John Obi Mikel just dropped a major hint that he would like to return to Chelsea one day?
Mikel only left Stamford Bridge in the January transfer window, but he firmly etched his name into the club’s hall of fame before departing.
The Nigerian made 374 appearances in a Chelsea shirt, scoring just six goals. Although that tally is by no means impressive, they were arguably the most celebrated goals in the club’s history, such was the rarity of a Mikel goal.
Mikel also won 11 trophies during his time in West London, including the Champions League, where he was instrumental in Chelsea’s compact, defensive setup, as we won the trophy for the first time in our history.
It appeared as though the Mikel and Chelsea love affair had come to an end when he put pen-to-paper with Chinese Super League outfit Tianjin TEDA in January, but the 30-year-old looks to have opened the door to an unlikely return.
Mikel is quoted by Daily Post reaffirming his love for the club and opening the door to one day returning to the Blues:
“I didn’t have the chance to say goodbye on the pitch to the fans who stood by me for over ten years, that itself is enough motivation for me to want to return.”
“I’m very happy in China but then what I have learnt is that in football anything can happen. Chelsea is home to me due to my close relationship with the management of the team but I’m happy in China.”
