- Roy Hodgson believes Ruben Loftus-Cheek is destined for the top.
- Loftus-Cheek was included in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad.
- The Englishman spent the 2017/18 campaign on-loan from Chelsea.
Roy Hodgson has been waxing lyrical about Chelsea loanee Ruben Loftus-Cheek following the Englishman’s inclusion in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad, as the Times report.
The decision to allow Loftus-Cheek to depart in the summer of 2017 and join a Premier League side on-loan was a shrewd one. He has been given far more first-team opportunities at Palace than he ever could have done if he remained at Stamford Bridge.
The superb season that Loftus-Cheek has enjoyed has led to his inclusion in England’s World Cup squad. Few could have predicted it at the start of the season, but Loftus-Cheek is going to Russia – and you can’t say he doesn’t deserve it.
The 22-year-old is destined for great things. Whether that be as a Chelsea player remains to be seen, but he will clamber his way to the top of the footballing world, even if it means departing his boyhood club.
Hodgson is another who predicts great things for Loftus-Cheek. The former England manager is quoted by the Times saying:
“He has got all the qualities you are looking for in a central midfielder. In the games he has played [at Crystal Palace], he has been almost our best player in every one of them.”
“We have Wilfried Zaha of course, but he has certainly been on his coat-tails. I have not worked with many players better than Ruben Loftus-Cheek and what he can be.”
“He has the chance to be a really top player at club and international level because he doesn’t have any weaknesses.”
The natural next step for Loftus-Cheek will be integration into the Chelsea first-team. When it becomes clear who will be in charge of the club next season, we will have a better idea of where he could fit.
For now, though, he has a World Cup to look forward to.
