Chelsea are close to sealing the transfer of Danny Drinkwater as per reports in the Telegraph today. He’s set to join in and add more competition to the midfield section.
Antonio Conte already has Cesc Fabregas and Tiemoue Bakayoko fighting to partner N’Golo Kante but the manager is keen on signing Drinkwater too. The former AS Monaco man however, is not scared of competition.
Speaking to SFR Sport (via Metro), he said,
“I’m not scared of any player but it’s competition and that’s what makes you better. He [Drinkwater] is a good player and he’s going to help the team. We don’t have enough players in the centre and he will make the team stronger.”
Bakayoko has all but made it clear that Chelsea will be signing the former Manchester United midfielder this summer from Leicester City.
However, like Bakayoko said, it needn’t scare him or Fabregas. Conte would still prefer to play one of them alongside Kante in all the important games and we might see Drinkwater only in the cup games or when the manager decides to rest his main players.
With that said, Drinkwater would not be a pushover. He has all it takes to grab the opportunity that comes in front of him and should he impress the manager more than Fabregas and Bakayoko, he might edge them to a starting Xi place eventually.
