  • Chelsea reportedly prepared to sell Davide Zappacosta for £17.5M.
  • Reports claimed Chelsea spent £25M on Zappacosta last summer.
  • Selling the Italian for a loss would be a backwards step for the club.

Chelsea could be set to sell wing-back Davide Zappacosta for a loss this summer. It makes little sense to us.

At the time of Zappacosta’s arrival on deadline day last summer, the Daily Mail reported that the deal was worth around £25M.

Zappacosta struggled to make much of an impact during his debut season. Being frank, he’s probably not up to Chelsea standard.

However, Zappacosta’s stock has not fallen since his move to Chelsea. If anything, he has become more high-profile and recognisable.

He has also made more appearances for the Italian national team since he signed for Chelsea than in any period prior.

That’s why it’s bizarre that the Gazzetta have reported that we’re prepared to sell the 26-year-old if we receive a bid in the region of £17.6M.

Chelsea’s player sales have been one of our few successes in the transfer market in recent years.

As the Mirror report, we raised an incredible £498.5M through the sales of first-team players between January 2014 and September 2017.

Following our failure to qualify for the Champions League for the second time in the past three seasons, every penny is valuable, especially considering our squad needs a major overhaul.

Needlessly selling Zappacosta for a reported £7.4M loss would represent a backwards step for Marina Granovskaia and the rest of the Chelsea board.

We have plenty of deadwood to offload this summer, both players returning from loan and those already infecting the squad with mediocrity.

This does not bode well.

If we play 4 at the back next season, where does he play? May as well get rid.
