Marc Guehi was one of the eight players who left Frank Lampard’s first team squad after the games in Ireland, with the full list appearing here on the Sky Sports website.
The defender has been a shining light for the academy in recent years, and the question now will be what to do with him.
Lewis Baker, Izzy Brown, Trevoh Chalobah and many of the others who departed with him will now be back in England sorting out their loan moves for the year ahead – and in some cases possibly permanent transfers.
Guehi is far too highly rated to be sold, and probably too good to return to the youth teams. So a loan is very much the next step. He was named on the bench for our final game of the season against Leicester, so even Maurizio Sarri appreciated his talent. Now that Joe Edwards and Jody Morris, who both know Marc from the academy, are in power, he should be a key part of the club’s future.
The first step is a good loan, one where he can adjust to senior football while playing a lot.
We hate to be the ones to suggest it, and maybe he can aim higher but – wouldn’t Vitesse be a perfect landing spot for the recently turned 19 year old?
There he can play every week in a fairly technical league, and prepare himself to try and break into our squad next season, or at least earn a loan to the Premier League.
It worked for Mason Mount, it could well work for Marc too.
