Signing Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano as a backup left back is proving very difficult for Chelsea. After weeks of discussions, they’re now being quoted crazy prices over £40m.

At that level, they might as well aim for someone younger and better. And Portuguese paper A Bola claims to know who could be in their sights. They say that the Blues are looking at Alvaro Carreras, the Real Madrid left back.

It would make sense – Madrid have just signed Marc Cucurella from Chelsea. But the departure of Fran Garcia to Betis means Carreras still has an important role to play. Certainly the Blues would have to make a very strong offer to convince Los Blancos to let go of Carreras, who was their first choice in the position for large periods of last season.

The article claims that Madrid want at least €50m for the 23 year old, who was a regular for new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso when he was in charge for the fist half of last season.

This still feels like a very distant deal – but if Rayo continue to play hard ball, anything is possible.

In other news…

Xabi Alonso has apparently already agreed on five players from his first team squad who are up for sale after seeing them in action for just a week.

Signing a 28 year old left back from Rayo Vallecano should be pretty straightforward – but Chelsea’s sporting directors are managing to make a meal of it.
