This window has been an uphill battle for Chelsea so far, and even easy deals are proving hard to pull off.
The prime example of that is the deal to sign Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano. He’s a 28 year old left back on low wages and without much profile. Like all La Liga players, he even has a fixed release clause.
Yet the Blues have been toiling for weeks to get the deal over the line. Nizaar Kinsella of the BBC has an update today on why that’s the case.
Rayo dig in over left back

The Blues are now being told that Rayo won’t sell unless they pay Chavarria’s release clause – which stands at £42,2m. That’s a massive sum for a player of his age, one who has spent most of his career in the Spanish second tier. The fact that Chelsea’s opening offer was £15m shows how astronomical those demands are compared to what was antipated.
Chavarria has four years left on his contract, and Rayo hold all the cards, even though the defender himself wants the move. The question is now whether Chelsea are willing to just walk away from the deal.
