Marcos Alonso

Chelsea are reportedly interested in signing Napoli full-back Faouzi Ghoulam.

The naked eye may perceive that Chelsea do not need to sign a new left-back. However, there’s definitely room for improvement in that area.

Marcos Alonso was included in the PFA Team of the Year. That was largely due to his positive performances at left-wing-back and commendable goal contribution.

However, he does not appear to have the required skill-set to operate as an archetypal full-back. He’s too offensively minded and weak on the back-foot.

That’s where Ghoulam comes in. According to Algerian newspaper Le Buteur, Chelsea are interested in signing the 27-year-old this summer.

Ghoulam’s release clause, as per the report, stands at around £43.7M. That’s a hefty figure to spend on a full-back, but City paid more for both Benjamin Mendy and Kyle Walker.

Chelsea will be forced to match the champions’ spending or face the possibility of falling even further behind. Poaching Ghoulam from Napoli would be a good start.
