Chelsea captain Gary Cahill could seek the Stamford Bridge exit door when January comes around, according to The Sun.

Casting doubt on Cahill’s future as a Chelsea player is risky business. The Englishman will forever adored by much of the fan base for what he has achieved during his time at the club.

There are those, however, who have grown tired of Cahill’s flimsy performances at the back. It’s unclear whether he can still be relied on.

Historically, Maurizio Sarri has placed value on centre-backs who are comfortable with the ball at their feet, able to carry the ball up the field and pass between the lines.

Cahill is an old-fashioned breed of defender. He does the basics well at the back, but little more. In Sarri’s squad, he’s a square peg looking to force his way into a round hole.

So far this campaign he has failed to do so. Cahill has not played a minute for Chelsea in the Premier League this term.

According to The Sun, Cahill’s lack of first-team action could see him call time on a six-year stint in SW6.

There is no mention in the report of any side who would be interested in signing Cahill, but his experience in the Premier League would make him the ideal candidate for any side outside the top six in England’s top division.

Cahill’s proposed exit would also provide Andreas Christensen and Ethan Ampadu a less obscured route into Sarri’s starting eleven, which would be great news for them.
