We’re all super excited by Xabi Alonso as a manager – but we weren’t getting our hopes up about his press conferences. The Spaniard is too clever and too measured to say anything too juicy. However, what he doesn’t say is as important as what he does say. When asked about incoming signing Maxence Lacroix, the coach was careful not to confirm anything, but he also didn’t trot out the usual “I won’t talk about players who aren’t mine” line that so many managers use.

“We want to build a competitive team. We are in that process. We have great quality, great talent, and we need to know what it takes to compete in the Premier League,” Alonso replied when asked about the incoming Crystal Palace defender, whose move is expected to be confirmed anytime soon.
“We want a squad with the right balance between quality and mentality. Those things need to match in terms of maturity stage, where you are in your career, the moment that this point is coming for each player, the hunger, the desire, the commitment. But I think that we are starting in a new season with good energy. That’s important.”
