Chelsea return to Champions League action this season after a one year absence from the competition. However, the Premier League champions will not receive a warm welcome back into Europe’s elite contest as they face the prospect of drawing giants Barcelona, PSG, and Atletico Madrid in the group stages of the tournament.
European superpowers of football will be present in Monaco this Thursday as the draw for the Champions League group stage is made at 18:00CET.
Along with Chelsea; Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Benfica, Shaktar Donetsk, Monaco, and Spartak Moskva will join the Blues in Pot 1 of the draw. As a result, Antonio Conte’s side will not face any of these teams in the group stages.
However, a number of top clubs await Chelsea in the group stages after they failed to win their domestic league last term. These teams include: Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, PSG, Borussia Dortmund, and Porto.
The opening round of fixtures will be played between the 12-13 September, the same week in which Chelsea face Arsenal – who failed to qualify for this year’s competition – at Stamford Bridge.
