Chelsea often get slated for not giving their youth players enough chances. Well, Antonio Conte has answered those doubters as three teenagers could get a run out against Bournemouth on Wednesday night.
The Italian confirmed in his press conference on Tuesday that Ethan Ampadu is likely to be in the Blues line-up. Meanwhile, Dujon Sterling and Callum Hudson-Odoi may earn memorable minutes at Stamford Bridge. With kick-off against the Cherries in the Carabao Cup not too far away, let’s look at these three exciting prospects.
The Welshman must be pinching himself with the progressive season he is having. Ampadu was a summer signing that was hardly talked about. A fee is still yet to be agreed with Exeter City. With the rotational role he has found himself in under Conte, it wouldn’t surprise me if the League Two side asked for a fair amount of money even at the age of 17.
The midfielder has found plenty of game time in this competition, starting against Everton and coming on early against Nottingham Forest. Most recently, he came on in the latter stages of our 3-1 win against Huddersfield at the heart of our defence. Ampadu is likely to play in central midfield for this league cup tie.
A more unfamiliar name compared to Ampadu, 18-year-old Sterling has been an integral part of youth success at Chelsea. After joining the club at just eight years of age, Sterling won back-to-back UEFA Youth League and FA Youth Cup titles, ranging from 2014 to 2017.
Playing prodominately as a right-back, Sterling is a versatile player full of energy and can even be used further up the pitch. These are the characteristics that can make an impression on Conte. Even though Victor Moses and Davide Zappacosta are ahead in the pecking order, the Englishman could be part of our first team plans in the future. Sterling also earned his first appearance in the 5-1 thrashing of Nottingham Forest.
Hudson-Odoi could well make his debut in this match. The speedy winger was part of England’s U17 World Cup triumph in India earlier this season. This success has caught the eye of many at the club. Hopefully the 16-year-old can grasp this opportunity that may come his way. However, this all depends on whether we are on the verge of going through to the next round late on in the game.
