Chelsea duo Alvaro Morata and Cesar Azpilicueta are on their way to breaking a long-standing Premier League record.
It’s the unlikeliest of partnerships. Azpilicueta is a centre-back, Morata a striker, you’d think that it’s very rare that the pair combine – but their minds appear to be almost entirely in sync.
Azpilicueta has the vision and the quality to deliver pin-point crosses into the path of Morata, and the former Real Madrid centre-forward is deadly enough in front of goal to provide the finishing touch.
The two combined for the opening goal of Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Brighton on Boxing Day. It was the sixth time Azpilicueta has assisted Morata in the Premier League this season, meaning that the two are well on their way to smashing the record.
The Daily Mail report that the current record is held by Mike Newell and Alan Shearer, formerly of Blackburn Rovers, and ex-Liverpool dup Stan Collymore and Robbie Fowler.
The tabloid’s report notes that the record of assists from one player to another in a single Premier League season stands at nine, which has stood for 22 years. Our Spanish duo have just three to go to equal the record, and four to write their names into the history books.
Go on, lads!
