Chelsea fans who are hoping to see Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi holding up our shirt will be encouraged by the latest news coming out of Italy.
Icardi has been tentatively linked with Chelsea over the years, though it’s unclear whether we have ever turned our interest into a concrete proposal. Until now, it’s seemed rather unlikely Inter would green-light his sale, anyway.
They may now have no choice. As per Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter have been told that they need to raise £44M in order to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations and avoid a fine, or even expulsion from European competition.
Naturally, the media have begun to speculate about how they are going to generate that cash, with the sale of Icardi being noted by The Sun as a potential option. Whether any parties involved in this report are willing to do business here remains to be seen.
Icardi is one of the best strikers on the planet and would be a considerable upgrade on Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud. He loves Inter, though, so don’t get your hopes up just yet, Blues.
