Following the shortfalls of Alvaro Morata this season, it would come as no surprise if Chelsea saw signing a new striker as a priority this summer.
There have been suggestions that the Blues are genuinely interested in signing Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski. It would be wise, though, to prepare a contingency plan for when that move inevitably falls flat.
One player that Chelsea could be looking at this summer is Inter Milan goal-machine Mauro Icardi. The Argentine found the back of the net on 29 occasions during his 34 Serie A appearances last season.
AS reported back in March that Italian journalist Fernando Czyz had claimed Chelsea tabled a £55M opening bid for Icardi. You have to assume that Inter would demand a far more inflated fee, but the bid would at least prove our interest is genuine.
Icardi’s wife and agent, Wanda Nara, has now entered the conversation. She claims that several top clubs are prepared to pay the 25-year-old’s release clause, which stands at an eye-watering £97M. She’s quoted by 101greatgoals saying:
“There are some big clubs ready to pay the release clause, which is very high, but considering the figures that are circulating in football right now and the kind of player Mauro is, it’s not even that remarkable.”
“The release clause is set at €110m, but is limited to only a few weeks in June.”
Would you be willing to pay that much for Icardi, Blues? Or should we seek a cheaper alternative? Let us know in the comments.
