Chelsea are working to sign Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson, David Ornstein reported today for the Athletic.
The 36 year old has “multiple Premier League sides” interested in him, but Chelsea are said to be the leading contenders. Henderson joined Brentford on a free transfer a year ago, and relations are “amicable” enough that they will let him move on for free now.
Brentford willing to let Henderson go for free
Henderson was taken to the World Cup with England by Thomas Tuchel in a semi non-playing role – that’s how highly his dressing room presence and experienced is valued.
He would be expected to do a similar job at Chelsea, who recently tried and failed to sign Granit Xhaka from Sunderland to play a similar role.
The pickup of Henderson would reduce the need to spend big on a midfielder to replace Andrey Santos, who has left to join Manchester United. With no European football to worry about, Chelsea can run a smaller squad that usual this season.
There is something odd about the fact that Brentford are willing to let their leader go on a free, when they could command a fee (even a small one) for for him.
