Southampton could be set to offer Gary Cahill an opportunity to prolong his Premier League career when January comes around.

Cahill has fallen out of favour under Maurizio Sarri, despite being granted minutes in recent cup games. There is no place for him in the squad if we’re looking long-term, with both Andreas Christensen and Ethan Ampadu needing minutes on the pitch to continue their development.

The Englishman has already admitted he could be forced to leave in January if he is able to force his way into Sarri’s thinking. The centre-back pairing of David Luiz and Antonio Rudiger looks to have solidified, so he has an uphill battle on his hands.

If Cahill does decide it’s time to leave Chelsea, The Sun believe that Southampton would be waiting in the wings to sign him. The Saints currently sit 16th in the Premier League table, and could certainly do with the 32-year-old’s experience in their efforts to remain in the division.

It’s unclear whether Chelsea would demand any sort of considerable transfer fee in exchange for Cahill, or would allow to leave him on the cheap as a thanks for his exemplary service.
